Tox-Away Days Beginning Soon
The Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District will again provide five Tox-Away Days in 2017.  The events are an opportunity for Hendricks County residents to properly recycle or dispose of household hazardous wastes, medical sharps, unwanted medicines, tires, appliances, computer components and electronics.
The 2017 Tox-Away Days will be held as follows:
May 20th at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds—enter from East Main Street
July 29th at Hickory Elementary School in Avon—enter from Avon Avenue
September 16th at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds—enter from East Main Street
October 21st at Plainfield Middle School—enter from Longfellow Lane
The events are open from 8:00am to 1:00pm and are available to Hendricks County residents only.  Regulations prohibit businesses from using the events.
Lenn Detwiler, the District’s Executive Director said, “Tox-Away Days continue to be very popular and well-utilized.   Last year over 4,200 participants came through the five events and we collected more than 366,000 pounds of material.  Residents seem to really appreciate what we do through our Tox-Away Day program and they continue to respond.”
Household Hazardous Waste
The events are designed to collect and properly dispose of those materials considered household hazardous wastes (HHW). Common examples of HHW include:  cleaners, antifreeze, fluorescent light bulbs (including CFLs), herbicides, pesticides, pool chemicals, oil-based paints and stains, fuels, mercury-containing items, medical sharps, batteries and adhesives.  These materials should not be disposed of by flushing or pouring them down a drain and shouldn’t be sent to a landfill or incinerator.  All household hazardous wastes are accepted free of charge during the Tox-Away Day events and will be recycled or disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.
No Latex Paint, Document Shredding or Heavy Trash Disposal
The District asks residents not to bring latex paint to Tox-Away Day for disposal since it is water-based and safe to dispose of with normal household trash.  The paint must be solidified before trash haulers will pick it up at the curb.  The District has produced a demonstration video on properly drying and disposing of latex paint.  That video can be viewed at HendricksSolidWaste.com/latexpaintdrying.
Additionally, document shredding and heavy trash disposal is not offered at the events. Items such as mattresses, furniture, scrap metal, flooring and construction debris should not be brought to Tox-Away Day for disposal.
Unwanted Medicines and Medical Sharps
The District will again partner with the Hendricks County Substance Abuse Task Force to collect unwanted medicines during the Tox-Away Days free of charge.  All kinds of medicines are accepted:  prescription, over-the-counter, animal medications, etc.  Residents bringing medicines are asked to leave the drugs in their original containers and ensure that the name and strength of the drug is readable as well as the name of pharmacy where it was filled, in the case of prescription medicines.  Any personal information may be blacked out or removed from the containers.
Medical sharps such as syringes and lancets are also accepted at the events free of charge, but must be delivered in rigid, puncture resistant containers. Acceptable containers include FDA-approved sharps containers or hard plastic laundry detergent bottles or similar containers with original, hard plastic lids. Sharps will not be accepted in metal or plastic coffee containers, beverage containers or any type of bag.
