Roles and Responsibilities:
The Development Director’s primary role is to secure the financial stability of Sheltering Wings in line with the Financial Integrity Statement. The Development Director oversees all aspects of fundraising planning and implementation including: corporate, foundation, and individual donor engagement, grant strategy and writing, special campaigns, and corresponding marketing/communications. The Development Director is expected to uphold both the vision and mission of Sheltering Wings.
Specific Duties
  1. Works collaboratively with the Executive Director and Annual Fund Coordinator to research, develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate all development programs related to individual donors, corporations, foundations, churches, schools and civic groups.
  2. Design and execute a moves management system that will facilitate the identification, cultivation, stewardship and advancement of prospects and donors and move them into greater involvement with Sheltering Wings.
  3. Execute fund development plan including new donor acquisition, grants administration/writing, and endowment building.
  4. Support Annual Fund solicitation strategy and calendar inclusive of direct mail, electronic/web solicitation, solicitation strategies utilizing social media, fundraising events, and church and civic group solicitations.
  5. Actively participate on development committee.
  6. Provide top-level thinking, analysis, and recommendations to the appropriate staff and Board of Directors regarding fund/resource development and related issues.
  7. Meet with appropriate staff as needed to discuss ways to maximize all partnerships, and review status and leveraging possibilities of current relationships.
  8. Develop stewardship/recognition plan of Sheltering Wings partners and donors.
  1. Identify and cultivate prospective donors in an effort to broaden and strengthen our donor base.
  2. Develop and execute strategy for identifying and cultivating recurring giving prospects.
  3. Complete visits with donors and prospects on an annual basis, including discovery calls, solicitations, and stewardship visits.
  4. Support cultivation/stewardship of individual donors through database analysis.
  5. Implement marketing strategies to promote planned gift giving opportunities to prospects.
  1. In conjunction with the Executive Director, coordinate and implement the annual Premier Event.
  2. Plan donor prospect receptions and stewardship events, such as Celebration of Blessings and Volunteer Appreciation Reception in conjunction with Volunteer and Receptionist Coordinator.
  3. Serve on the Golf Outing committee and Domestic Violence Awareness Month committee.
Business Development:
  1. Initiate contact and build business relationships in the community, ensuring new corporate donors are developed and strengthened.
  2. Provide information on contribution options through direct mailings, marketing materials, public speaking and meetings with potential donors.
  3. Prepare and manage sponsor solicitation materials and proposals, contracts, and promotional agreements, tailoring programs to targeted funders.
  4. Solicit and negotiate in-kind gifts of product and services.
  5. Attend Chamber meetings and cultivate relationships.
Church Relations (beginning 2019):
  1. Recruit, coordinate/develop, promote and execute plans for Church Connection Council.
  2. Cultivate and oversee church partnerships through financial and in-kind giving, volunteering, prayer support and speaking engagements.
  3. Develop and promote monthly prayer support.
  4. Develop/update church marketing materials.
  5. Coordinate all Church Connection Council activities.
Marketing and Communications:
  1. Provide information on contribution options through marketing materials, direct mail appeals (in conjunction with Annual Fund Coordinator), public speaking and meetings with potential donors.
  2. Coordinate stewardship mailings, and gift acknowledgement process.
Direct Supervision of Position(s): None until 2019 (Major Gift Officer to be hired)
Qualifications for the Position
Requirements for the Position:
  1. Full commitment and dedication to the missions statement of Sheltering Wings
  2. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in non-profit/fundraising, communications, public relations or business
  3. Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience working in direct fundraising
  4. Demonstrated success in corporate and individual gift cultivation and solicitation, event management and working with volunteers
  5. Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  6. Proven networking skills and relationship building
  7. Strong in creative, planning, organizational and administrative skills
  8. Ability to work flexible hours and events; can and will include some evenings and weekends
Preferred but not required:
  1. Donor relationships in Marion and Hendricks counties
  2. Prior fundraising for non-for profit domestic violence shelter
